Bitou Deputy Mayor investigated after gun-firing video
Police in the Garden Route District have set up a team to investigate the conduct of Bitou deputy mayor Nokuzola Kolwapi, following the circulation of a video showing her firing a gun in Plettenberg Bay.
Kolwapi was filmed discharging the weapon during what was described as a celebratory event linked to her son’s initiation. The footage spread widely on social media, prompting public concern. She has since stated that the object shown in the video was a toy firearm.
In her response, Kolwapi framed the incident as a symbolic gesture connected to South Africa’s gender-based violence crisis, arguing that women should not be portrayed only as victims. This explanation failed to ease criticism from the public and political parties who described the act as reckless.
The controversy deepened after a second video emerged from a different angle, allegedly showing Kolwapi handing the weapon to her bodyguard after firing it. The Bitou Municipality has confirmed that the bodyguard is a member of law enforcement.
Such an incident should not come as a surprise. This kind of irresponsibility from leaders in South Africa has become the norm. South Africa today reflects a culture of lawlessness, decay and foolishness. Politicians often act with impunity. Accountability is almost non-existent.
But this is South Africa. We should notice these incidents, but not be consumed by them. Rather, focus on incentivising responsible behaviour such as hard work and on building strong, independent institutions. Use your vote, yes, but place greater focus on family, community, and finding practical solutions to local problems.
