DA fails to take out ANC speaker in Knysna

The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) attempt to oust Mncedisi Skosana, the speaker of Knysna municipality, faltered on Monday, failing to secure sufficient votes. The motion of no confidence, introduced last month after the DA’s walkout from a special council meeting, did not pass during the regular council session.

In the vote, eleven councillors opposed the motion, while only nine supported it. The DA had called for a secret ballot, but the acting speaker opted for a public show of hands, which predictably fell along party lines.

Knysna’s municipal governance rests on a fragile coalition of the ANC, EFF, Patriotic Alliance (PA), and Plaaslike Besorgde Inwoners (PBI). The DA claimed that some coalition members privately backed the motion but feared party retaliation.

The voting saw the DA and the Knysna Independent Movement in favor, while the ANC, PA, EFF, and PBI opposed the motion. The DA’s proposal followed their protest over procedural irregularities in convening the special council meeting.

Jason White of the DA criticized the acting speaker’s decision to use a show of hands, arguing it undermined democratic principles and fairness. He reiterated the DA’s commitment to holding the coalition government accountable and ensuring effective governance.

In contrast, the ANC’s Khalid Sayed welcomed the motion’s failure, dismissing it as a destabilization attempt by the DA. He emphasized the ANC’s outreach to the DA to stabilize the Western Cape’s hung municipalities, aligning with the spirit of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
