EFF and other protesters disrupted Provincial parliamentary proceedings to pressure DA into condemning Israel
SHARE POST:
Once again, the EFF has disrupted a legislative sitting, this time the Western Cape Provincial Parliament.
On Thursday, their disturbances compelled the Speaker, Daylin Mitchell, to abruptly adjourn the session. Premier Alan Winde was scheduled to respond to questions about the economic development budget among other items, but the EFF derailed the agenda by pressing Winde about the provincial government’s stance on ties and trade with Israel.
As the question time neared, ANC Member of Provincial Legislature (MPL) Khalid Sayed complained that belongings of pro-Palestine protesters in the public gallery were being confiscated.
ANC MPL Cameron Dugmore raised concerns about the alleged removal of property, stating, “There is a serious allegation that an item of property belonging to one of our guests has been removed.”
Speaker Mitchell, observing the tumultuous atmosphere, declared, “It is clear to me that the members of this house have no intention to continue with this session. You are clearly demonstrating that you have no desire to continue, and for that reason, I will now adjourn the sitting of the house.”
Mitchell had to assure the ANC members that all questions and written replies would be documented in the Hansard, as has been normal procedure in SA legislative bodies for over a century.
Following the adjournment, the gallery echoed with chants of “free Palestine” from pro-Palestine supporters. Charterist party members accused Premier Winde of avoiding questions, and condemned their “silence” on the Gaza situation.
EFF MPL Aishah Cassiem claimed that the adjournment was purely to protect the Premier form scrutiny.
The DA had previously expressed support for a two-state solution, advocating peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel. Party leader John Steenhuisen emphasized solidarity with both Palestinians and Israelis seeking a diplomatic resolution.
