France signals deeper maritime cooperation with port call in Cape Town

Defence Web reported yesterday that France is sharpening its strategic focus on maritime cooperation with South Africa, highlighted by the port call of a French Navy surveillance frigate Nivôse in Cape Town.
French Ambassador David Martinon framed the relationship as a practical response to a more contested maritime environment in Southern Africa, where illicit trafficking, piracy and risks to undersea cables and offshore infrastructure are rising.
The emphasis, he said, is on operational priorities: naval cooperation, maritime surveillance, intelligence sharing and the protection of assets critical to modern economies.
The visit also underscored the growing military dimension of the relationship. Major General Jean de Monicault, France’s senior commander in the Southern Indian Ocean, described South Africa as a pivotal maritime hub, especially as shipping patterns adjust to insecurity in the Red Sea and pressure on the Suez route.
