Freedom Front grows by 200% in Langebaan by-election
SHARE POST:
A by-election held two days ago in Ward 6 of Langebaan, part of the Saldanha Bay Local Municipality, has revealed a notable shift in local political support, despite the incumbent party retaining the seat.
The Democratic Alliance (DA), which previously secured 3,538 votes in the 2024 election, saw its support drop sharply to 1,510 votes in the 2026 by-election. While the party still held onto the ward, the decline represents a significant reduction in voter backing in what has traditionally been considered a stronghold.
In contrast, the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) experienced a substantial increase in support. The party grew its vote count from just 169 votes in 2024 to 514 votes in 2026. Although this was not enough to secure a victory, the upward trend suggests a shifting political landscape and growing traction among voters in the area.
The by-election results come amid increasing public concern over rising municipal costs. The VF Plus has been actively campaigning against what it describes as excessively high rates and taxes affecting residents in parts of the West Coast and areas such as Sea Point. The party is currently driving a petition aimed at addressing these concerns, positioning itself as an alternative voice on local economic pressures. Will the Freedom Front be able to hold the DA accountable in the Western Cape?
