The fresh produce industry in South Africa is considering legal action against the Cape Town port authority due to ongoing delays in the container terminal, leading to quality and condition losses.

Industry leaders, including Hortgro’s executive director Anton Rabe, express frustration and insist on recouping losses. While there has been some recent improvement, the need to move 3,000 containers weekly for table grape and stonefruit crops is critical.

Exporters are already moving containers to the Eastern Cape to escape the traffic at the Cape Town port.

Grape exporters report packing delays of nearly three weeks, with millions of cartons held up in Cape Town. Strong winds contribute to the issues, but inefficiencies and equipment shortages are major concerns.

Exporters using specialized reefer vessels navigate challenges better, while conventional reefers are in high demand.

Delays also impact US shipments of early stonefruit, prompting consideration of a charter vessel to deliver fruit directly to Philadelphia.

The industry faces significant opportunities in the US market, and these delays risk damaging its reputation as a supplier of top-quality fruit.
