The old locomotive Sylvia the First completed a successful test run from Hartenbos to Mossel Bay on March 19th 2026. The engine dates back to the 1930s and has been restored by Atlantic Rail, a small family run company in the Garden Route.

The test run to Mossel Bay marked the first time in 16 years that a train has moved along these tracks. People gathered along the route to watch the train pass, with many taking photos and videos. For residents of the Garden Route, it was not just about seeing a train again, but about reconnecting with a part of their local history that had been missing for far too long.

The excitement of the train continued on the April 4th when the first passenger trip took place. The newly restored steam train made a journey to Hartenbos carrying passengers to and from the town. Michelle Reyneke and Suzette Herrer “climbed aboard the train with their friends and families over the Easter weekend, making sure to enjoy the scenic route from the train’s windows.”
