Koeberg unit 2 hits 365 days continuous operation
SHARE POST:
Koeberg Nuclear Power Station Unit 2 has operated for 365 consecutive days without interruption.
The unit returned to service on 30 December 2024 after major upgrades. It has run continuously since 9 March 2025. Over this period it achieved an energy availability factor of 99.4 %, supplying a steady 946 MW to the national grid.
Eskom expects the unit to continue operating for about 412 days before its next planned maintenance on 26 April 2026.
Koeberg provides stable baseload power, reducing reliance on coal generation from the north. As a nuclear facility it produces no greenhouse gas emissions during operation.
Bheki Nxumalo, Eskom’s group executive for generation, said nuclear expertise has been central to this performance. He described Koeberg as a key anchor for grid stability and long term economic growth.
The result is a modest but clear improvement for Eskom. It supports efforts to raise generation performance and strengthen energy security.
