Cape Town’s Central Line welcomes new electric trains for the first time, dubbed the “People’s Train,” marking a significant advancement in the city’s rail infrastructure. The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) announced the introduction of these modern blue and white Electric Multiple Units (EMUs), alongside an extension of the service from Nyanga to Mandalay station.

PRASA explained: “This deployment of the ‘People’s Train’ follows the completion of essential electrical and perway infrastructure between Nyanga and Nolungile. The modern signalling system will not only improve the frequency and punctuality of our trains but also reduce delays and congestion This rollout demonstrates our commitment to revitalising and modernising commuter rail services. Communities along the Central Line now join others who have benefited from these high-tech trains on different corridors.”

The new electric trains boast state-of-the-art features, including automated doors, CCTV cameras, and air-conditioning. Additionally, the completion of the signalling system from Langa to Mutual is seen as a major milestone in enhancing the safety and reliability of the service.

The introduction of these trains aims to provide a safe, efficient, and dignified service to the 40% of Cape Town’s commuters who depend on this vital route. The extension to Mandalay station is expected to bring significant socioeconomic benefits to communities such as Langa, Nyanga, Khayelitsha, and Mitchells Plain.

This development builds on PRASA’s recent successes, including the reopening of 31 out of 40 commuter rail corridors and the refurbishment of 263 out of 463 stations, signaling a new era for Cape Town’s public transport.
