The City of Cape Town has confirmed that there will be no water restrictions over the summer months, following a review of dam levels, consumption trends and short-term supply forecasts.

This announcement comes after concerns from residents over the lack of limits during the December holiday period, when demand on the city’s supply was high.

While water demand rose during the December holiday period, officials say overall system capacity remains sufficient for now. The legal authority to impose restrictions lies with the national Department of Water and Sanitation, which has not triggered any limits.

Current dam status

  • Cape Town System Dams: 65.90%
  • Steenbras Dam (upper): 85.83%
  • Steenbras Dam (lower): 62.74%
  • Theewaterskloof Dam: 60.90%
  • Berg Rivier Dam: 67.90%
  • Wemmershoek Dam: 72.80%
  • Voëlvlei Dam: 67.97%
