The Referendum Party (RP) has fulfilled its pledge made during its launch in November 2023 by formally requesting to join the Multi-Party Charter (MPC).

In a letter addressed to the MPC parties, the RP emphasized its alignment with the MPC’s assessment that the upcoming 2024 South African national elections could lead to an ANC-led national coalition government that is more radical and detrimental than the current administration, potentially harming the welfare of ordinary South Africans.

In the letter (which can be found here), they emphasise the right to self-determination under the Constitution and three international treaties signed since 1994, and

“in the context of the Multi-Party Charter, referring a decision on Cape Independence to the Western Cape people themselves is consistent with decentralising power to the lowest effective level, whilst in contrast, denying the Western Cape people the right to vote in a referendum as provided for in the Constitution, and which polling shows an overwhelming majority of Western Cape voters support, is incompatible with this principle.”

RP leader Phil Craig stated, “Two key MPC objectives are shielding citizens from an ANC-led government and decentralizing power. Proposing a referendum in the Western Cape, as per the South African Constitution, to determine if residents want to permanently remove the ANC and EFF aligns perfectly with these ideals. Cape Independence will deliver precisely this.”
