SA Jewish Board of Deputies criticism of ANC deepens after Hamas visit
SHARE POST:
The South African Jewish Board of Deputies has condemned the ANC in the Western Cape for hosting Hamas delegates, and for labeling Hamas a legitimate resistance movement.
This comes after the ANC in the Western Cape hosted Hams leaders Dr Bassem Naim, Dr Khaled Qaddoumi and Emad Saber, who met with ANC MPL Muhammad Khalid Sayed.
The ANC defended its association with Hamas, emphasizing global condemnation of Israeli actions and accusing the SAJBD of undermining South Africa’s efforts for a peaceful resolution in Palestine.
The SAJBD urged the ANC to reconsider its affiliation with Hamas, citing concerns about rape as a tool of war during the October invasion of southern Israel, and called for the unconditional release of hostages. They accuse Hamas of being antisemitic and dedicated to the violent destruction of Israel:
“Rape is not Resistance. Nor is taking hostages an act of social justice. Hamas is not a freedom fighting organisation. Rather, it is one dedicated to the violent destruction of Israel and which portrays Jews as being an intrinsically evil people who must be hunted down and killed wherever they might be. It says so in its Charter, and its heinous attack on Israeli civilians on 7 October bears this out.”
The ANC, in turn, called on the SAJBD to condemn Israel:
“Does the Cape SAJBD condone the egregious actions of the Israeli Defence Force, responsible for the savage sexual assault of countless women, children and men? These acts stand in direct contradiction to the principles and goals of the 16 Days of Activism and with the United Nations.”
This continues ongoing friction between the Board, which was a historic supporter of the ANC, and the ruling party, which has taken an increasingly strong partisan position on Israeli-Palestinian issues.
The recent lecture by former intelligence director Ronnie Kasrils was a particularly sore point, in which he expressed support and delight for the Hamas attack on Jewish civilians on October 7, referring to it as a “brilliant, spectacular guerilla warfare attack.”
The SAJBD attacked Kasrils as antisemitic, though Kasrils is himself Jewish.
The conflict over Gaza has even got the SAJBD to condemn Julius Malema as “a man full of hate”, after his comments in support of Hamas, reversing their decade-long silence over his chanting of genocidal rhetoric against whites.
