South Africa branded unsafe for British tourists

In a stark warning, Members of Parliament have deemed South Africa a “no-go zone” for British tourists, citing soaring crime rates and troubling associations with Vladimir Putin’s Russia and Hamas. The cautionary advisory comes amidst growing concerns over safety in the region.

South Africa’s crime epidemic, with a murder rate 46 times higher than that of the UK, has propelled it into the list of the world’s most dangerous countries. Conservative MP Sir Michael Ellis highlighted the country’s increasing peril for British travelers, particularly noting its recent involvement in a joint naval exercise with Russian and Chinese fleets in the Indian Ocean. The welcoming of Hamas leaders for a conference on the Israel-Hamas conflict and a controversial agreement with Iran to develop oil refineries have further raised red flags.

Sir Michael Ellis emphasized the deteriorating social, economic, and political situation in South Africa, cautioning against any travel plans to the country without updated travel insurance. His concerns echo those raised by fellow Conservative MP Andrew Percy in the House of Commons, who questioned the safety of Jewish people in South Africa and criticized the adequacy of travel advice provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO).

The advisory against travel to South Africa also follows the country’s decision to ban Daniel Teeger, a pro-Israel journalist and university lecturer, from captaining the South Africa Under 19s cricket team. South Africa’s contentious move to accuse Israel of genocide in Gaza, a case rejected by the International Court of Justice, has further fueled tensions.

Current UK government travel advice for South Africa underscores the precariousness of the situation, warning of a high risk of terrorism, kidnap, violent crime, and vehicle hijacking and robbery. The statement advises against all but essential travel to the region and urges British nationals to exercise caution if already in the country.
