Wine industry forms professional standards body
In a significant step forward for the wine industry, South Africa has unveiled the South African Wine Industry Professional Body (SAWIPB). This voluntary self-regulated professional body was officially introduced at the KWV Cathedral Cellar in Paarl, Western Cape, marking a transformative moment for the industry.
The SAWIPB has an ambitious agenda that focuses on creating an environment conducive to development and elevating various disciplines within the industry. Its objectives encompass building a reservoir of knowledge, relevance, governance, and accessibility for both existing and emerging practitioners.
KachnĂ© Ross, the manager for people and skills development at South Africa Wine, emphasized the professional body’s role in developing individuals and supporting industry-related entities to ensure social sustainability.
She pointed out that the SAWIPB’s main purpose is to enhance the competencies of the industry’s workforce by formalizing voluntary associations with specific designations. This initiative aims to equip workers with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform at their best, keep them abreast of emerging technology and regulations, and provide insights that facilitate industry growth.
The SAWIPB’s functions are delineated in four main pillars:
- Inform Industry-Specific Development Initiatives: It seeks to proactively identify opportunities to develop individuals within the South African wine industry.
- Designate Individuals: The SAWIPB plans to assign specific designations to industry professionals to recognize their expertise.
- Promote Participation in the Professional Body: Encourage individuals in the wine sector to become members, thereby facilitating learning and development.
- Build a Support Structure: Create a robust framework within the wine industry that fosters professional growth and development.
To ensure an all-encompassing impact, SAWIPB aims to elevate the skills and competence of individuals working in the industry’s four sub-sectors: primary production, secondary production, tourism and marketing, and logistics and distribution.
KachnĂ© Ross expressed her enthusiasm for this initiative, emphasizing that it offers a tailored, all-in-one structure for individuals’ career development within the wine industry. As members, people can embark on a learning pathway that propels their careers, leading to designations as industry professionals. They can seek recognition for previous learning that contributes to obtaining designations and qualifications while adhering to a system that promotes ethical conduct and socially sustainable practices.
CEO Rico Basson highlighted SAWIPB’s importance in not only supporting the industry’s professional growth but also in advancing its transformation goals. He emphasized that empowering individuals through career development is a strategic imperative for the industry, underscoring the pivotal role played by the workforce in driving the wine sector.
The establishment of the South African Wine Industry Professional Body underscores the industry’s commitment to professional development, knowledge enhancement, and creating an equitable and sustainable environment for all individuals involved in South Africa’s vibrant wine sector.
