The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) has raised concerns over the live export of animals by sea after a livestock carrier, the Al Kuwait, docked at the Port of Cape Town with 19,000 distressed cattle on board.
The vessel, which arrived over the weekend from Brazil and is scheduled to sail to Iraq on Wednesday, has been emitting a strong stench, reportedly from animals living in their urine and feces during the voyage.
NSPCA officials, including veterinary consultant Dr. Bryce Marock, have been aboard the ship since Sunday to assess the animals’ welfare. The NSPCA highlighted the inhumane conditions the animals endure, confined in cramped quarters with limited ventilation and hygiene.
The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has confirmed the vessel’s docking and stated that the state veterinarian has approved the collection of animal feed. TNPA emphasized that the welfare of the animals is a top priority and that measures to safeguard their health have been implemented.
The NSPCA reiterated its stance against live animal exports by sea, urging the public to consider the plight of these animals as efforts continue to ensure their well-being.
