Stellenbosch Captured: Retraction
SHARE POST:
On the 27th of March we published a story concerning alleged corruption in Stellenbosch Municipality (Stellenbosch captured, facing serious financial risk), and in the previous night’s podcast, we discussed many of the contents of said article. Premised upon the basis of the fact that there were numerous factual inaccuracies contained within the podcast content and the written media article, we have decided to unequivocally withdraw both the podcast and the written article, and we tender an irrevocable and unequivocal apology to Gesie van Deventer, Leon Schreiber, Jeremy Fasser and the Democratic Alliance regarding the unfortunate publication of the problematic journalistic pieces which were published on our web platform.
Regarding those parts of the story which may remain factually accurate, several are thrown into doubt by unreliable details from common sources.
As to the specific claims we are called on to address:
Firstly, the timeline of events was confused, and alleged a proximity between Schreiber and van Deventer going back to 2016. We retract any inference that Schreiber was in any way involved in van Deventer’s appointment, either to the mayoralty or to the local selection panel.
We mistakenly described Mayor Jeremy Fasser as a driving instructor. He was in fact the owner of a local driving school, which he operated for 21 years. We retract these remarks, as well as the inference that he was selected because of his race, which was reductive of his role, and apologise for any offense caused, and any inaccuracy in these descriptions.
We also apologise for the claims that Rudi Buys was part of an old boys’ network shared with Schreiber. This was not only inaccurate, but wildly so, and we apologise for this, as well as any offence caused by the characterisation of him as a “far-left transformationist”.
We apologise for any offense caused and any unfair reputational damage any of the aforementioned content may have caused, and retract all aforementioned statements and characterisations.
