Tiger Brands to reopen historic Paarl factory in April 2026

Tiger Brands will reopen a refurbished factory in Paarl that will be fully operational by April 2026. The existing factory was originally established in 1903, and the new plant will be used for producing jams, vinegar and chutney.
The refurbishment is estimated at about R120 million and forms part of the company’s strategy to invest an estimated amount of R1,5 billion annually over the next few years to ultimately drive cost efficiencies. Tiger Brands wants to further establish itself as a key manufacturing hub and strengthen production capabilities in the Cape.
Although Tiger Brands stated that it is committed to local economic development, which means that employment opportunities and the workforce remains a priority for the food producer. The operational requirements are still being estimated and determined, and as a result job numbers, permanent and temporary positions have not been confirmed, but will be in due course. Tiger Brands does confirm that raw materials from qualified local suppliers will be sourced.
With no clear estimates of how many potential jobs will be created for the locals or individuals from surrounding areas, it makes me wonder the consequences of this refurbishment for Paarl. How will household and families be affected by this project? Will Tiger Brands strengthen or weaken the middle class? For the future of our grandchildren, we must pressure large corporates to think locally and oppose the grey slop they so often bring. Our Cape tradition, families and environment are more important then the economy or stock market value of Tiger Brands.
